The West Point Skiff®

UPCOMING BOAT SHOWS

Maine Boatbuilders Show

Portland, Maine

March 16, 17 and 18, 2012

I have always been interested in building boats, as well as preserving a bit of the history of West Point, where I make my home.

The West Point Skiff® design is derived from the Casco Bay Hampton.  As outboard engines became available, the design of the Casco Bay Hampton evolved to accommodate these engines.  The result is the flat bottom aft and the V bottom forward which results in a small but seaworthy boat to work the waters close to ledges and islands in all weather. The design by Amos Wallace was handed down to his son Alton, who modified it and built over 200 boats in the village of West Point, hence the name.

The design for the boats I build is from an 18-foot West Point Skiff® that I own and use to fish for lobster. It was built in 1969 by Alton Wallace (1909-1995), who I knew well.
